The filter would not come off, from any angles and grips. What an idiot, it did NOT have to be this tight. This is why he’ll never amount to being anything other than a shitposter on oppositelock. Because that someone, was me.

Did you make this face while trying to take off the filter?

I am a lifelong proponent of the strap-wrench thingie. Works every time, which is important when my friends ask me to change their oil after a fast lube place has welded the filter on.

There comes a point where I throw the strap wrench across the driveway, get myself a flat screwdriver and hammer it through the filter. Then you have a big and convenient handle for spinning the filter off.

Almost resorted to the screwdriver. But then I remembered that I’m stubborn and just kept on twisting with some dry garden gloves

My souvenir from living in Germany. I’ve had it actually tear through the cannister of the filter, but every filter has surrendered.

I resorted to that once on my Fiero after I made the same mistake as Zoidberg. It didn’t end well...

I’ve never had luck with a strap wrench, maybe it would have worked on one of them I was able to remove by hand, but I’ve never tried because there was no point to. Had to resort to the screwdriver once, after that I bought one of these:
Since 3 out of 4 of my vehicles use the same filter, and the one that doesn’t I barely drive, it works out great. And at $10 they’re cheap enough that buying more than one size isn’t terrible. I’ve also resorted to these on most occasions before I got the wrench:

When reading this, towards the middle I thought “that’s a little harsh” then towards the end I started chuckling. Don’t be too hard on yourself, I was doing an oil change on an ‘08 XC70 once and it took over an hour. XD. I got oil everywhere, the floor, my clothes, my hair, it was a mess.

As a mechanic I run into this all the time and I wonder if it’s putting the filter on too tight or not lubing the gasket. Did you rub the o-ring with an oily finger?

1. this is why I get puralator gold oil filters, they’re coated in sand paper like grip.
2. Those little rubber things that help open jars in the kitchen are crazy helpful if you have a slick oil filter, I keep one in my toolbox. Just like the ones in the kitchen, I have no idea where they came from. They just appear.
